SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s Dalton Sopchak, wrestling for the first time this season at 160 pounds, lifted his team to a thrilling three-point win on senior recognition night Thursday.
Sopchak trailed M-E’s Tyler Curtis 6-3 after one period, but rallied with a pin just 12 seconds into the second session to earn the victory.
The Marauders’ Jack Buell jumped to 152 pounds and picked up a 4-1 win over Josh Farfar to set up Sopchak’s decisive victory. “We had a lot of guys come down in weight, and that gave us some movement for better matchups tonight,” said S-E assistant coach, Brian Hicks. “It was an exciting match, and we had a big crowd.”
Garrett DuVall (182), Cody Marshall (195), and Cody Santiago picked up pinfall wins to give the host Marauders the early lead. Marshall’s was also a comeback win turning M-E’s Mitch Van Ormer with 25 seconds left, and finishing off the pin. If the match lasted the full six minutes, Marshall would have lost 9-7, Hicks said.
S-E competes in Oneonta’s Ross Cordell Tournament Friday and Saturday.
