Ambulance district meetings next week
COLUMBUS – The towns of New Berlin and Columbus will each hold public meetings Monday in regards to the proposed ambulance districts in each municipality. The New Berlin meeting will take place from 6-7 p.m., and the Columbus meeting will take place from 7-8 p.m.
“The vote for creating an ambulance district is an entirely separate issue from the [Unadilla Valley Ambulance Service],” said New Berlin Supervisor Ross Iannello. “The district we’re creating is a tax district and only pertains to how the taxes are expressed.”
New Berlin EMS Director Kenneth Wiggins agreed that the district vote and any new ambulance service were two separate issues: “All we’re creating with the ambulance district are lines on the map.”
Each tax district will have the right to contract with any service they choose. Iannello explained that the proposed tax district would only serve to create a new tax line in the budget specifically for EMS revenue and service “whether the ambulance comes from the village, CMT or Sherburne.”
The meeting will give members of the community a chance to voice their opinions about the tax district and get responses from local leaders. A vote on the measure will occur on Jan. 24.
