Tornado flip switch in second half

Norwich 74, Windsor 42
NORWICH – Norwich flipped a switch offensively and defensively in the third quarter, and turned a close game into a blowout win Friday night at Jack Jones Gymnasium.
Norwich, tied with Windsor at 20-apiece in the second quarter, finished the first half on a 12-2 run led by a pair of three balls from Kyle Edwards. The two clubs traded threes early in the third before NHS truly took control.
Edwards canned two more threes, and Dennis Oralls bucketed 11 of his 17 points during the quarter as the Tornado closed the third on a 22-7 spurt.
“We started slow against Seton, and we’ve started slow almost every game,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “Our defensive intensity wasn’t good enough early on. To Windsor’s credit, they played really hard, and they played really hard the whole game.”
Providing a big lift for Norwich off the bench in the first half was senior Eric Walling, who is rounding into shape after battling ankle issues the first month of the season. Walling drained a big three ball during Norwich’s closing first-half run.
“The big thing in the second half is that we didn’t give them a cushion defensively, and we went back to our full-court pressure,” Collier said. “We have some huge games coming up, and Oneonta will be a massive test for us Monday. They’re all forwards and we’re all guards. It should be an interesting game because of the contrast in styles.”
Edwards had 20 points to lead NHS, and Seth Thomsen added 10. The Tornado bench totaled 25 points, the third time in four games in which the Tornado reserves totaled at least 20 points. “We’re not good enough to beat teams on talent alone,” Collier said. “But we are good enough to grind teams out with our depth.”
Norwich improved to 7-2 overall with the win.

Morris 29, G-MU 28
MORRIS – Morris’ full-court pressure yielded a steal and go-ahead basket with 20 seconds left, and G-MU’s well executed play in the last seconds resulted in a close-range shot that was off the mark in Friday’s T-V League contest.
Alexis Forgit picked up the steal for the Mustangs, and took the ball in for the go-ahead basket. Forgit also had a free throw in the fourth for Mustangs to account for all of her team’s points in the last quarter.
Neither team led by more than four points, and that lead was established in the first quarter, said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “Our bane all year has been putting the ball in the basket at times, and that hurt us again tonight,” Johnson said.
Johnson drew up an out-of-bounds play in the last seconds that his team had never practiced. The play was run to perfection, and nearly ended in the winning basket. “It was kind of neat to run a sneaky play and get the shot you want,” Johnson said. “It was probably the best shot you could get in that situation, and it just rolled off the rim.”

Amanda Frayer and Savannah Murray scored 16 points apiece, and Kayleigh Livermore added 10 for the Hornets, who are unbeaten against MAC competition this season. “I thought our girls played with tremendous effort, and I was pleased with that,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer, who had just six players available for the game. “We were just a little outgunned. I think Harpursvlle should be a sectional contender this year. They have good balance and a lot of shooters.”
Megan Golden scored 11 points for Oxford, and her two three-pointers in the first half helped the Blackhawks stay in the game early.

GREENE – Coming off a nice performance in a loss to Chenango Valley earlier in the week, the Trojans regrouped from an 11-point first-half deficit to extend the momentum with a comeback win over Walton Saturday.
The Warriors led 12-3 at the outset, and scored the opening basket of the second quarter. Greene finished the quarter on a 14-2 run getting two put-back baskets from Rebecca Smith, and two driving layups from senior Jessica Brooks. “We got off to a rough start again, but we overcame that,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “The baskets by Smith and Brooks really changed the momentum of the game.”
Kaitlin Gorton hit a key three-pointer in the third quarter to extend the Greene lead to seven, and Natalie Greene completed two layups off Shannon Gregory passes to maintain the edge in the fourth.
Brooks had a team-high 12 points, and Smith, playing her best game of the season, scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Kristen Barnes had nine points for G-MU, who host Laurens on Wednesday.
