NORWICH – Norwich senior Dennis Oralls was dead-on in the second half, and fellow senior Seth Thomsen put an exclamation point on the end of a Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory over longtime rival Oneonta, Monday night at Jack Jones Gymnasium.
Oralls scored on an array of jumpers, spot-up three-pointers, and driving baskets draining 16 of his 28 points over the final two quarters to finish one point shy of his career-high game.
“That was probably Dennis’ best all-around game as a varsity player,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “He’s been playing well anyway, but he was hurt and is getting healthier. That is good news for us.”
Oneonta was the latest team to get off to a fast start against Norwich scoring the game’s first six points. Bryce Wooden, Mike Calkins, and David Wright scored baskets prompting a Collier timeout.
NHS responded with the insertion of defensive standouts Danny Carson and Storm Cook, and the Tornado finished the quarter on a 12-2 run. Carson took a hand-off pass from Thomsen at the top of the key, and canned a three-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer to give Norwich a 12-8 lead.
Thomsen hit a short jumper after a helper from Mike Sutton to start the second, and Oralls completed a fast-break three-point play extending NHS’s lead to 17-8.
“They gave us some problems with their power game, but I thought our pressure defense hurt them,” Collier said. “We subbed in Storm and Danny midway through the first quarter, and our defensive intensity really picked up. When we went to our diamond press, the momentum of the game really changed.”
Kyle Edwards hit two three pointers in the second quarter, and Orall’s driving basket just before halftime lifted Norwich to a 32-24 advantage.
Norwich extended its lead to 38-26 early in the third when Carson deflected an inbounds pass, and Oralls picked up the steal and layup.
Oneonta committed nine turnovers in the third quarter alone, but still managed to close the Norwich advantage to 42-37. Ben Payton’s corner three-pointer had the ‘Jackets as close as they would come in the second half.
Oralls closed the quarter strong for Norwich finishing a layup after a steal, then burying a three at the top of key after receiving a pass from Edwards.
Thomsen had a smooth lefty finish to start a 6-0 mini-run for Norwich early in the fourth. Oralls, showing more polish in his offensive game, beat his man off the dribble and pulled up for a 12-foot jumper, then followed with a spinning move in the lane that led to a soft six-footer that found nothing but net.
“We see a lot of zone defense, and I thought we executed against it a lot better tonight,” Collier said. “Dennis hitting those shots opened things up for us.”
Thomsen added 18 points, the last two the most electrifying for the Norwich faithful, and Edwards netted 10.
