Norwich prevails over Warriors

Norwich 52, Chenango Valley 45
NORWICH – Norwich turned back Chenango Valley’s fourth-quarter rally to earn a key Southern Tier Athletic Conference win Tuesday night.
In a meeting of potential Class B Section IV playoff opponents next month, Bryn Loomis fed Cassie Sutton for a short jumper with 16 seconds left that put Norwich up 50-45. Loomis had a steal on the next Chenango Valley possession, and made two more free throws in the waning seconds to ice the victory.
Chenango Valley trailed 48-38 with 2:27 to play after Norwich’s Jenni Borfitz converted a steal into a layup.
The Warriors’ Megan Pipher completed a driving layup, Kate Bigart, just five feet tall, scored an improbable inside layup, and Maddie Staiger’s step-back three ball closed the gap to 48-45 with 47 seconds left.
Norwich traded off leading scorers in each quarter to take the early lead. Sophie Stewart scored six points on the inside in the first quarter, Loomis had eight in the second stanza, and Hailey Dietrich netted eight in the third.
The Warriors held Norwich scoreless the first 3 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter to trim a 41-30 NHS lead to 41-36. Breanna Cashman’s three-point play for Norwich ended its drought, and Loomis hit a pair of free throws after back-to-back steals to put Norwich back in control.
Loomis led Norwich with 14 points, seven assists, and seven steals. Dietrich posted a double-double scoring 13 points and pulling down 12 boards.
In the junior varsity game, Norwich upended Chenango Valley, 49-39. Savannah Williams scored 18 points for the Tornado.
Norwich plays Oneonta on Friday.

AFTON – Unadilla Valley had six different players score in a 23-point first quarter on its way to a seventh straight win on Tuesday.
Jordan Anderson had 16 points, Taylor Davis 12, and Brittany Fairchild tallied a season-best 10 in the UV win. “I was really nervous because we haven’t played in two weeks,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “I didn’t know if we would be as serious as we should be, but they were. It was a great first quarter.”
Payton Cutting scored 18 points to top the Crimson Knights.

LAURENS – Laurens led from the outset to deal the Raiders their second straight loss on Tuesday night.
The Leopards finished with seven three-pointers in the game, and held off a G-MU charge in the fourth. The Raiders came as close as two points, and short-rimmed an inside shot that would have tied the game.
“They shot the ball probably the best they have all season, and we didn’t expect that from them,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “We couldn’t overcome their threes and their energy. When you talk about 50-50 balls, they got to every one.”

Joe Peri had 21 points for the Red Lions, who grabbed an early five-point lead following one quarter of play. “Cincinnatus is a really good team, and if we want to beat them, we need to put the ball in the basket,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We had a tough time with that, and part of that was their defensive capability. We played hard tonight, we just didn’t make enough shots to give ourselves a chance to win.”
Howard Straight scored a season-high 15 points to lead OV. Before the game, Loomis, a longtime coach for the Vikings, was recognized for 300 career coaching wins.
