Greene’s village cruise-ins to resume this year after all

GREENE – Fans of the Greene Cruise-In have reason to rejoice this winter as it was announced yesterday that, despite its proposed discontinuation, the event will resume in May.

Enzo Olivieri of Hilltop Building and Construction and Wess Van Voorhies, otherwise known as “Big Wally” of the Binghamton classic rock station 99.1 WAAL, began the cruise-in five years ago in cooperation with numerous other members of the Greene community.

The event was a chance for classic cars from across the state to gather in the center of the village every first and third Thursday of the month beginning in May and continuing through October, weather permitting. The last Thursday of each month was slated for a “bike night.”

“It was also an excellent opportunity for the community,” said Olivieri. “It generates revenue and traffic for the area ... we also held various fundraisers for the fire department and/or local charities.”

Olivieri reported that more than $5,000 had been raised last year alone. Organizations, such as the Boy Scouts, Rotary and the Lions Clubs, also set up booths at the event where they could promote or have their own fundraisers.
