Storm earn respect in loss to top-ranked Hornets

NEW BERLIN – Despite its seven-game winning streak going by the wayside, Unadilla Valley earned a measure of respect pushing unbeaten Harpursville for four quarters.
The Hornets, the number one ranked Class C team in the state, had 13 points from Amanda Frayer in the first quarter, and built a 45-32 lead at the halftime break.
“They couldn’t miss in the first half,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “We made some adjustments at halftime, and that helped.”
Led by Amanda Off, Jordan Anderson, and Taylor Davis, the Storm closed the deficit to as little as six points in the second half. “We never gave up,” Backus said. “There were some mistakes in the fourth quarter, but you’ll have that with a young team.
Off scored a team-high 23 points, Anderson netted 20, and Davis 15.
Frayer topped all scorers with 28 points as the Hornets improved to 10-0 on the season.

BAINBRIDGE – Jacquelyn Heggie scored 13 of her season-high 21 points in the second half as Oxford recovered from a nine-point deficit in the first quarter.
Shania Vandermark put the Bobcats in front early, and netted 18 of her 22 points lifing her club to a 28-20 halftime lead. "We played well for the first half, but in the third quarter we seemed to fall asleep,” said B-G coach Bob Conway.
The Bobcats went 1-for-10 from the field in the third as their lead was trimmed to one. Heggie and Lacey Barry had 18 combined points over the second half to lead the Oxford comeback.

AUBURN – Locked in a tie game through three periods, the Vikings blanked Tyburn Academy over the final eight minutes, and scored 12 points of their own for their fourth win this season.
Hope Reynolds hit two threes in the fourth and scored seven of her 11 points to pace OV. "We played really good defense in the fourth quarter, and that was the difference in the game," said OV coach Ron Graham.
Kayleena Manwarren added nine points for the Vikes.

WATERVILLE – Sherburne-Earlville's strong first half allowed it to survive a shaky third period and hold off Waterville for its 10th win of the season on Saturday.
Karly Wagner came off the bench for six points in the second quarter helping S-E to 36-19 lead. Waterville nearly erased that deficit in one period outscoring the Marauders 17-4 in the third. "As well as we played offensively in the first half, we struggled that much in the third quarter," said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. "We weren't turning it over, we were just missing easy shots."
Balanced scored righted the ship for Mulligan and the Marauders, who completed a regular season sweep of Waterville. Cassie Beaver had 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Marauders, Sierra Morris hauled down 11 caroms, and Briana Vibbard scored nine.

BAINBRIDGE – Oxford avenged a one-point loss to B-G from earlier this season, and snapped the Bobcats' four-game winning streak on Saturday evening.
Andrew Golden hit four three balls for Oxford and scored a team-high 20 points, and 6-foot-5 senior Caden Izard added 17. Overall, the Blackhawks finished with a season-best seven three-pointers in the contest. "They shot it well, but I don't think we did a good job of closing out on the perimeter," said B-G coach Greg Warren. "We were able to control the tempo better when we played them the last time, and this time, it was the exact opposite."
B-G's Ryan Porter and Austin Bauerle finished with double-doubles. Porter had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Bauerle 11 markers and 11 boards.
B-G hosts Windsor Wednesday in a non-league game.

NEW BERLIN – In a defensive battle at UV High School Friday, the Storm pulled away in the second half behind junior guard Justin Hofer.
Hofer finished with 20 points, 15 of those during a 27-20 second half. Hofer added seven rebounds and six steals in the win, and teammate Brett Smith scored 10.
With the victory, UV evened its season mark at 5-5.
