Arts Council plans contemporary music and dance for Feb. 4
NORWICH – The Chenango County Council of the Arts, 27 West Main Street, Norwich, will present “Kaleidescopika,” a music and dance collaboration featuring Cordis and LehrerDance, on Saturday, Feb. 4.
For over a decade the critically acclaimed contemporary quartet Cordis has been redefining contemporary music by fusing an original combination of custom-made and traditional ethnic instruments to create their signature sound.
Although the ensemble is built upon cello (Jeremy Harman), concert cimbalom (Richard Grimes), piano (Oscar Rodriguez), and percussion (Andrew Beall), one-of-a-kind creations such as the electric mbira, melodica, and world’s longest playing cylinder-driven music box also have a way of weaving their way into any given performance. Time Out New York said “(Cordis) makes a strong case for both sides of its musical personality - expanding the boundaries of chamber music.”
“Kaleidescopika” launches their vision into an even more passionate dimension that melds their euphoric compositions with the sensuality of dance, the adrenalin of multi-media and the whimsical fantasy elements of cirque. “Kaleidescopika” is an interdisciplinary collaboration with Cordis and LehrerDance laced with cirque type acrobatics and effects.
LehrerDance is an inspiring and innovative dance company based in Buffalo. Under the direction of Jon Lehrer, the company showcases Jon’s unique choreography and embodies his definitive style. Jon’s extensive background in both the modern and jazz dance idioms fosters choreography that is organic, artistic, accessible and often humorous, reflecting life experience and the human condition.
LehrerDance began in July 2007 and has already received much national notoriety and critical acclaim. The company tours extensively, bringing their trademark athletic, edge-of-your-seat excitement to audiences nationwide. Dance Magazine said, “LehrerDance took the house not so much by storm as quantum physics. Jon Lehrer's strikingly original choreography transformed the stage into an energy field of super-charged particles.”
The blend of athletic and theatrical contemporary dance with the hypnotically emotional soundtrack created by Cordis delivers a perfect feast of sight and sound that appeals to a diverse audience. Musical purists will revel in the virtuosity. Devotees of Laurie Anderson and Philip Glass will find rapture in the artistic intricacy of the shows soundscapes. Even audiences who would label themselves more fans of Pink Floyd or Tangerine Dream will immediately lose themselves in the electricity of thought and sensation that drives “Kaleidescopika.” It is a sight & sound experience that melds dance, multi media, & music into one breathtaking production.
“Kaleidescopika” is sponsored by MeadWestvaco and is the third performance in the Council of the Arts’ annual performance series. Upcoming performances include the Clancy Legacy on March 10 and m-pact on May 11.
Tickets range in price from $20 to $25 with discounts for seniors and members of the Arts Council. Youth 18 and under are always $10. For reservations or more information call 336-ARTS (2787) or visit www.chenangoarts.org.
