Norwich 58, Chenango Forks 33
CHENANGO FORKS – Coupled with Susquehanna Valley’s loss to Oneonta Tuesday night, Norwich gained sole possession of first place in the STAC Central Division cruising to a victory over Chenango Forks Tuesday evening.
Norwich seniors Seth Thomsen and Dennis Oralls had 12 and 10 points respectively, and sophomore Michael Sutton contributed 11 points. The Tornado starters were subbed out liberally in the first half, and after the first four minutes of the third quarter, took a seat for the rest of the evening. “We were able to jump out to a big lead, which we wanted to do,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “We established some things with our press, mixing defenses, and working in guys that needed to play. We wanted to make sure we got a 20-point lead and play some more guys. Guys that haven’t played much this season got a lot of minutes tonight.”
Norwich led 34-15 at the half, and upped the advantage over 25 points midway through the third stanza. Twelve of the 13 NHS players that dressed found the scoring column.
Norwich plays at Susquehanna Valley Friday, and visits Johnson City next week. “Right now, the division title is within our grasp, but we need to win our next two games,” Collier said.

Wrestling

Windsor 45, Norwich 39
NORWICH – Norwich coach Joe Downey juggled his lineup, but was unable to plug all of the holes in Tuesday evening’s defeat to Windsor on Senior Recognition Night.
Despite giving up three forfeits, Norwich was still in position to earn a dual meet win over the Black Knights, a Section IV dual meet qualifier. Josh Myers rallied from a 6-1 deficit to win his 126-pound match, 10-7; and Frank Garcia’s pin at 145 pounds put Norwich within 42-39 with one weight class remaining.
There, Matt Kitstner (152) took a 7-2 lead over Norwich’s John Marvin after two periods, survived back points from Marvin, and got a reversal of his own to grab a meet-closing 9-6 victory. “It was a total team effort with guys moving around,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “We pretty much moved up our entire lineup, and in some cases two weight classes. It was a barnburner, we just came up short.”
Norwich stalwarts Tristan Rifanburg (120), Garcia, Tanner Cummings (160), Anthony Vitello (170), and Kegan Levesque (182), all picked up pinfall victories. Also earning a pin was seventh-grader Cole Rifanburg at 99 pounds.
Myers’ victory provided the most excitement for the partisan Tornado crowd. Windsor’s Noah Zakrajsek controlled the action on his feet, and used two takedowns in the second period to build a 6-1 edge. Myers turned the momentum with a late reversal heading into the third.
Myers’ cradle in the third knotted the match at 6-6, but Zakrajsek regained the advantage with an escape. Myers, though, surged with his lone takedown with 53 seconds left, and he added a set of back points to finish off the victory.
“Windsor is a really tough team, and can’t take anything away from them,” Downey said. “We’re hoping to get healed up, and we have a couple weeks left in the regular season to get ready for the big tournaments.”
Norwich hosts Unadilla Valley Thursday in a non-league clash.

Boys’ Swimming

Norwich 104, Sherburne-Earlville 76
NORWICH – Norwich varsity swimming coach, Kevin Diefenbacher, called Tuesday’s night’s home meet against Sherburne-Earlville a “captains’ meet.”
For the first – and only – time this season, Diefenbacher’s team captains set the lineup, and the results for not unlike an early-season victory over the Marauders.
“Even though we had kids moved all over the place, we still had four personal-best swims tonight,” Diefenbacher said. “This is probably the last meet where we can move kids around. We’re at Owego Friday, and that will be a good meet for us.”
Norwich won just five events, two of those relays. Gregory Todd won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles for NHS, and Joe Stagliano had the only other individual win claiming the 100-yard breaststroke.
