Workshop addresses online safety for teens

NORWICH – In an effort to address the increasing concern for the safety of kids growing up in a digital age, a special program titled “Teens and Technology” will be offered from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Chenango Count Council of the Arts Auditorium on 27 West Main St.
The presentation is hosted by the Family Resource Network in collaboration with the Chenango County Department of Social Services, Coordinated Children’s Services Initiative, Chenango County Department of Mental Health, Chenango County Probation, Liberty Resources and the Greater Binghamton Health Center. It’s being offered free to the public and parents, caregivers, providers, students and anyone else wishing to attend are welcome to learn of the dangers teens face in a technologically driven society.
According to Megan Andrews-Witiker, executive director of the Family Resource Network in Oneonta, tonight’s program is designed to address as many forms of modern technology used among teens as possible.
“Some online activity can be so ambiguous,” she said. “This will help people identify the risks and the careless behaviors and what can happen.” She went on to say that the program is a “great opportunity,” particularly for families with children who have disabilities and may not be aware of some of the potential dangers of modern technology.
New York State Trooper Peter Grunder, troop “C” school and community outreach coordinator will be the speaker of the night, addressing the risks of careless online behavior, procedures for online safety and the specific strategies in addressing questionable or illegal online activity. His lecture will also cover growing threats of other common technological trends like texting, sexting, blogs, chat rooms, the increasing threat of cyber bullying and the consequences of other risky or illegal online behavior.
“There’s stuff to learn all the time and I don’t believe teens know everything involved,” said Catholic Charities of Chenango County Community Educator June Georgia. “When they push that send button, the information’s out there ... technology can be your best friend or it can work against you.”
To register for tonight’s program, community members are encouraged to e-mail their name, affiliation, e-mail address and phone number to the Family Resource Network by using their website, www.familyrn.org.
