Local set to take part in D.C. March for Life Monday

NORWICH – Sunday marks the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling of Roe v. Wade – a landmark ruling the extended a woman’s right to have an abortion. In protest to this ruling, the Knights of Columbus Council 211 in Norwich are sponsoring a bus trip to the nation’s capital for the annual March for Life along the National Mall Monday morning.
This march is a long-standing tradition for pro-life activists nationwide and one that the KOC is honored to take part in every year, said Jim Reynolds, Norwich Knights of Columbus Grand Knight.
Nearly 300,000 are drawn to the event, combining their efforts to uphold the belief that human life should be preserved by the society as a whole. “A bulk of it is youth, which is tremendous ... It’s a tremendous event that’s so important,” Reynolds said. “Everyone needs to be aware of it.”
So far, Reynolds said there are less than 35 people signed up to go, including his son, Shane and daughter, Megan. People from all corners of Chenango County as well as the Cortland and Binghamton area are bussing to D.C. with him in pursuit of their ultimate goal of overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling and recognize the National Day of Prayer and Penance for Life.
“We’re a Catholic organization, but this isn’t just a Catholic issue,” Reynolds said, emphasizing that there is a moral obligation in the March for Life.
On top of their annual participation in the March for Life, the Knights of Columbus are also actively supporting abortion alternatives, local pregnancy centers and education on the matter while attempting to sway women away from their decision to follow through with an abortion.
“The heart starts beating at six weeks,” explained Reynolds. “Once people realize this is a human being, hopefully they’ll think they can’t just kill it .... You never know if you’re going to kill off a future president or someone remarkable.”
The Knight of Columbus sponsored trip to D.C. will leave St. Bartholomew’s on 30 Prospect St. at 11 p.m. on Sunday and return by 11 p.m. on Monday. Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for students and donations are always welcome. For more information about the trip, contact Reynolds at 336-1311.
