Norwich man arrested following brief chase

NORWICH – A Norwich man was arrested Sunday morning after he allegedly led city police on a brief chase which began on Canasawacta Street as he attempted to avoid authorities.
Josh Lynn Hurlbutt, 38, 6 Grove Ave., was charged with third degree unlawful fleeing a police officer, a class A misdemeanor, as well as a number of traffic violations, including failure to stop at a stop sign, second degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle while using a mobile phone and reckless driving, following the incident.
According to authorities, this is not the first time Hurlbutt has been involved in a crime of this nature. A year ago, Hurlbutt was charged with more than a dozen criminal offenses and traffic infractions after he led New Berlin Police on a six-mile chase – at speeds of up to 75 miles per hour – that ended with an officer tackling him as he tried to flee his four-door sedan after blowing out a tire.
Police records indicate that – on Sunday – Hurlbutt was talking on a cell phone while traveling north on Canasawacta Street when they observed him accelerating away at a high rate of speed, turning east on to Cortland Street without stopping or slowing down. He was then seen turning into a private driveway. Officers located Hurlbutt’s unoccupied vehicle at the rear of the residence and made the arrest after uninvolved witnesses reported him fleeing into a nearby apartment.
Hurlbutt was held in the city lock-up pending his arraignment and is currently being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $500 cash bail. He will appear in Norwich City Court at a later date.
