SPCA gears up for Fur Ball fundraiser

NORWICH – The Chenango County SPCA is preparing for one of its largest annual fundraisers, The Valentine Fur Ball, to reel in support for its mission of helping homeless animals in the community.
The Eighth Annual Fur Ball Silent and Live Auction will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich. The semi-formal gala includes light gourmet fare, cash bar, commemorative photographs by Gerry Raymonda Photography and the up-beat music of Splash. The night promises to be a good time and judging by the local support borne by the occasion in past years, hopes for this year’s event are high, said CSPCA event coordinator Sue Reymers.
The SPCA is heavily reliant on community support. Donations supply food, vaccinations and the labor needed to provide for sheltered animals. More than 300 people attended last year’s Fur Ball, selling out tickets and contributing nearly $10,000 to support the cause of the SPCA. More than $1,500 was in mail-in donations alone, Reymers said. This year’s goal, she said: To exceed last year’s donations and raise $13,000.
“There’s usually a tremendous response from those attending ... This really is an essential fundraiser for us. It’s possibly one of the most important nights of the year,” Reymers stated.
Individuals countywide are chipping in and giving whatever they can offer for the silent and live auctions. Several local businesses have chimed in, too, by donating services and goods for bidding throughout the evening. Among donations, Aim Fitness is offering a one-year gym membership and Shade Tree Charters donated a fishing charter for the day – contributions accounting for more than $500 each, according to Reymers. The CSPCA brought in more than $4,000 as a result of last year’s auction. As great as that was, Reymers said, aspirations are to surpass that amount this year.
For those who wish to contribute but can’t make the event, the organization is once again seeking mail-in monetary donations, but money is not the only thing the organization is seeking. Reymers said anyone who wishes to contribute something to the auctions would also be greatly appreciated. In recognition of those benefiting the event, donors’ names are being added to the CSPCA website as a gesture of gratitude for their contributions.
Reymers also added that support from local businesses and key sponsors including Staffworks, The Pennysaver and The Evening Sun are already making this event another success. “Without them, this would have been a much tougher event,” she said.
Tickets are available to order online at www.chenangospca.org until the order deadline on Feb. 3. Cost is $40 per individual and $75 for a pair. More information regarding the Fur Ball is available by calling Reymers at 334-9724 ext. 6 or by visiting the Chenango County SPCA website.
