The most important meal of the day

Well, Punxsutawaney Phil saw his shadow, I suppose that means we’re in for another six weeks of this brutal winter weather. Oh, wait ...
So much for all of my complaints leading up to winter. Maybe I blogged about hating winter so much that Mother Nature finally said:
“You know what, Julian? Fine. Just have your freakin’ Fall/Spring and we’ll just forget all about the hip-high piles of snow and -12 degree mornings. Are you happy now, Julian? All those skiers and snow-boarders are going to go without their favorite activity for a year. Are you pleased with yourself, Julian? Are you happy now?”
To which I would reply:
“Yes, yes I am.”
Personally, I just can’t believe it’s February already. Apparently, I’m having a lot of fun, because time is in an F-22 Raptor at the moment.
I’ve been writing quite a bit about healthy living during the last week and it’s really gotten me thinking about my own health and what I do right or wrong, especially when it comes to eating.
There are only about a billion and a half diets out there to choose from and some of them just seem ludicrous to someone who has always enjoyed almost any type of food.
A baby food diet? The Japanese banana diet? The all-egg diet?
Now, I am possibly one of the biggest breakfast food fans on the planet. I’m sure I could eat only breakfast foods (mmmm, bacon) three times a day for the rest of my life and never feel unsatisfied (steak counts as a breakfast food if eaten with eggs). But to eat only eggs? That’s going a little far.
My biggest concern are the diets that have people depriving themselves of food or eating strange concoctions that are supposed to “re-set your levels” or “lower the set-point.” Whatever that means.
I’ve met people who promote these cleansing diets and extreme eating habits who look ten years older than they are, and I know people who have maintained a balanced meal for fifty years and have been able to enjoy red meat, cake and pancakes without seeming to age a day.
I do believe there is such thing as excess, and that should be avoided at all costs, but by staying away from restaurants and fast food joints, and making time each day for exercise and activity, I don’t believe it’s necessary to resort to starvation or eating monkey food (yep, that’s a diet too.)
So what have we learned today? Well, hopefully many of you will reconsider that Big Mac but not shy away from a cupcake once in a while.
And I’ve learned not to write a column about food on a day that I skipped breakfast.
