County tax corrections amount to $11,000

NORWICH – Nearly $11,000 will be refunded to property owners who were incorrectly taxed by Chenango County, their towns and their school districts in 2011 and 2012.
Three assessment errors totaling more than $4,000 – two of which were on parcels in Bainbridge and one on land in Guilford – were small claims and court-ordered reductions.
A parcel in Columbus was inadvertently duplicated on the rolls; the adjustment made totaled $2,022. Another sizable refund, $1,288, went to a Plymouth taxpayer who had a double-wide removed prior to the March 1 reporting date.
Chenango County Real Property Tax Director Stephen Harris reported the corrections to members of the Finance Committee last week. During discussion, Town of Greene Supervisor Jack Cook said the town-employed assessors who calculate the taxes shouldn’t be making mistakes, and suggested to Harris that the county not refund its portion of the adjustments. The county will return more than half of the amount.
“Have the towns pay for it all ... not just their share of the mistake,” he said.
Town of Pharsalia Supervisor Dennis Brown commented, “That would light a fire under them.”
Chenango County Deputy Treasurer Barbara Strier released to committee this year’s date for the annual tax foreclosure and sale. The final day to avoid foreclosure is May 11, the last day for interested buyers to submit bids on properties is July 24, and the bids will be opened July 26.
