UV readies for annual senior citizens dinner
NEW BERLIN – The Unadilla Valley Central School district and faculty association will hold its 24th Senior Citizens’ Dinner beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 17 in the school’s cafeteria.
This year’s theme will be ‘Senior Homecoming Bash’ and will include a variety of activities and mementoes pertaining to homecoming, sports and senior year. Everyone who attends will have chance to get their pictures taken and will get a free copy to take home as a souvenir.
“We wanted to do something for senior citizens that would be fun and bring members of the community together,” said co-organizer Geraldine Crooker, a foreign language teacher at the school.
The event requires the whole school to participate.
“It’s a way to get everyone active and participating,” she said.
For example, the music department will emcee the event and has organized an extensive playlist of songs from the last century for attendees to enjoy, and even dance to. The dinners will be cooked by cafeteria staff and one of the home economics classes pitched in to create a variety of desserts.
“Everyone has their own little jobs and we all come together at the end to put on this great event,” said Crooker. “It’s a lot of fun and everyone enjoys getting involved ... It’s a good feeling when you can do something to give back to the community in some way.”
The event was previously been held around Christmas time, but was moved to a February a few years ago to attract more participants at a less busy time of the year.
