S-E's Franklin, Santiago second at sectionals

SYRACUSE – Sherburne-Earlville seniors Spencer Franklin and Cody Santiago each finished second at the Section III Division II meet at Onondaga Community College Saturday.
Franklin and Santiago advanced to the finals where they met wrestlers with whom they were well acquainted. Franklin (120), an overtime winner over Adirondack’s Pat Webster a week earlier, dropped a 5-4 decision in the return clash.
Webster picked up the first takedown, and Franklin was in catch-up mode the rest of the way. The match dynamic was not dissimilar to Franklin’s win the previous week where he rallied from a 4-1 deficit. “It just came down to Spencer needing a takedown at the end,” said S-E head coach Bim Palmer. “Both kids are pretty equal and hard-nosed. Spencer went out and left it all on the mat. That’s all you can ask for as a coach.”
Santiago, in just his second year as a wrestler, nearly claimed the 220-pound championship. In his fourth meeting with Canastota’s Travis Conklyn this season, Santiago gave up a takedown in overtime to lose 3-1. In the four matches, the two wrestlers have two wins apiece.
“Those two kids have gone back and forth, and it was just (Conklyn’s) time to win,” Palmer said. “Cody didn’t have a lot of time to learn a bunch of moves the past two years, but what he knew, he knew well.”
Also placing for S-E was Hunter Owen, who was sixth at 99 pounds.
Franklin and Santiago will each await a possible wild-card entry into the state tournament. Palmer said the wild-card names will likely be released on Wednesday. “We think Spencer has a good shot,” Palmer said. “He’s had a couple of big wins this year. We hope both of our guys get in.”
