Rifanburg leaves no doubt

BINGHAMTON – For the first time in an already remarkable wrestling career, there were doubts about Norwich freshman Tristan Rifanburg.
Those doubts were unwarranted.
Rifanburg upended three-time defending sectional champion, Corey Dake of Lansing, and was duly named the Section IV Division II most outstanding wrestler Saturday evening at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Rifanburg led a parade of six local Division II champions as Oxford’s Joe Nelson won his school’s first sectional title in three years, and Greene’s Dan Dickman, Mike Beckwith, Keegan Cerwinski, and Kyle Stanton earned individual accolades leading the Trojans to the Division II team title.
Rifanburg, already a two-time Section IV champion and a 2010 state champion, likely entered his third finals appearance as the underdog. Dake demolished Chenango Valley’s Dustin Greene in the semifinals with a third-period pin, while Rifanburg eked out an overtime victory over Austyn Bostwick of Waverly.
It was revealed some time later that Rifanburg was a bit under the weather in Saturday morning’s victory over Bostwick, but he was clearly healthy that evening. “I’ve said this all along, it seems that when Tristan is under the spotlight, he kicks it up an notch,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “He’s incredible in those situations.”
Rifanburg’s star was indeed burning bright against Dake, who not only has his own sterling resume, but a pedigree of championships. His older brother Kyle is a two-time New York State champion and two-time defending NCAA champion.
Dake and Rifanburg each played it cautious in an uneventful first period. To start the second period, Dake won the coin flip and chose bottom. Dake did not choose wisely.
After narrowly holding on to Dake the first minute-plus, Rifanburg finally flattened Dake out, and worked one of his patented tilts. With 30 seconds left in the period, the crowd erupted as Rifanburg earned three critical back points. “My heart is still beating fast,” Downey said several minutes after the match. “We knew if (Tristan) went out there and applied pressure, he could beat Dake mentally. Us getting the three back points, I think it broke (Dake) down.”
Rifanburg elected to stand with Dake to start the third period, and he countered a Dake shot with a takedown of his own on his way to a 5-2 victory. “I knew he was tough on his feet and he was tough on the mat,” Rifanburg said after the victory. “This is probably one of my biggest wins. It’s Corey Dake, it’s a huge win.”
Nelson, in just his second varsity season, used a runner-up finish from a season ago as motivation for this season’s tournament. On his finals sheet for the wrestler introductions, the word “runner-up” just didn’t sit well for the Blackhawks grappler. Facing Walton’s Dylan Wood for the third time this season, Nelson cruised to a workmanlike 6-2 victory over Wood.
“I’ve probably worked 10 times harder since last year,” Nelson said after the victory. “Wood has gotten a lot better, but I was able to counter his moves.”
Greene’s four championship wins was a first, said head coach Tim Jenks, whose club has won team titles each of the past three weekends. Beckwith and Cerwinski won their second sectional titles, Dickman captured his first, and Stanton earned that elusive championship after winding up second the previous two seasons.
Stanton’s victory was fraught with emotion. Normally stoic and business-like before, during, and after his matches, Stanton yelled toward the arena’s rafters after edging Tioga’s Nick Talcott 3-2 in the 220-pound division’s final bout. “I tried not to think about (the losses) too much,” Stanton said. “I thought about it too much last year, and I lost a heart-breaker. I knew I had to wrestle my best matches all day. Nick is tough, and we have a long history from peewees. It’s always a tough match with him.”
Dickman kicked off a 4-for-4 finals performance for the Trojans toppling Whitney Point’s Jordan Torbitt, 11-4. Following a scoreless opening period, Dickman exploded for nine points in the second period with three different sets of back points. “That was the best match he wrestled,” Jenks said of Dickman. “You’re always waiting for some kids to have a great tournament. The timing was perfect for (Dickman).”
Beckwith (160), who has missed most of the last month after suffering a back and neck injury in a car crash, did not skip a beat in a dominating run to the title blanking Sidney’s Nick Jump, 12-0. Beckwith will make his third straight trip to the state meet, and has not lost a match on the mat this season. “This just shows you what type of an athlete (Mike) is,” Jenks said. “This surprised me because he’s really only had a week of practice since January fifth.”
Cerwinski (182) repeated as tournament champion pinning Walton’s Mike Beers in 5:43. It was Cerwinski’s third win over Beers in as many weeks, and he has remained impressive in each encounter. “He’s really coming on,” Jenks said of his 182-pounder. “He’s really good on his feet and on top. I’m really proud of what he’s done.”
Elsewhere, Norwich went 4-for-4 in the third-fourth consolation finals matches, and surged to a third-place team finish, its best in several years. Frank Garcia (132), Anthony Vitiello (160), Cody Bradbury (182), and Kegan Levesque (195) finished their seasons strong.
Of note, Vitiello was down 3-2 to Waverly’s Dylan Gutierrez with less than 10 seconds left. Vitiello pulled off a big throw executing a takedown and pin with one second on the clock to avenge two prior losses to Gutierrez. “It was disappointing for some of our seniors to not meet their goals, and they could have thrown in the towel,” Downey said. “It was great to see those guy wrestle back and finish third in some respectable weight classes.”
Oxford’s Nik Hansen wrestled back for a third-place finish. The oft-injured Hansen served notice that he could be a contender in next year’s tournament. “It was a super, super performance for Nik,” said Oxford coach Craig Tefft. “It’s such a great thing for him to finally get that success after struggling the past two years with knee injuries. If not for missing most of the last two years, he might have been wrestling at seven o’clock tonight instead of 5 o’clock.”
Greene was also perfect in the consolation rounds with Brendan Wheeler (106) and Joel Roselle (170) topping the list placing third. “We’ve never had four champions before and we’ve never went perfect in the consolation round either,” Jenks said. “The thing is, we had a couple of guys out that should’ve been here. We could have been even better.”
B-G/Afton had six wrestlers place, and finished right behind Norwich in the team scoring. Mark Viviano (195) had his best-ever sectional finish winding up second to two-time state tournament runner-up Ryan Todd of Lansing.
Viviano reached the finals avenging a loss to Norwich’s Levesque picking up a 5-2 victory.
