Four sentenced in county court
NORWICH – Four people charged with various felonies were sentenced in Chenango County Court on Friday.
• Bradley Romano, 27, of Sidney, was sentenced to four years in state prison and five years post-release supervision after pleading guilty to one charge of menacing a police officer, a class D felony, following a court-approved furlough.
Romano was indicted on that charge in January of 2011, in addition to charges of third degree criminal possession of a weapon – also a class D felony – two counts of fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count of resisting arrest.
On Dec. 13, 2011, Romano, who was wanted on a bench warrant for second degree assault, was located by New York State Police in the Town of Guilford. Once located – and prior to his arrest – Romano admitted to pointing a 16-gauge shotgun at troopers.
On Friday, Romano said he deeply regretted the incident and is devoted to turning his life around. Judge W. Howard Sullivan, in response, said Romano has only lived approximately one-third of his life and – unless he wants to spend the remaining two-thirds in prison – needs to “follow through” and “do what you say you’re going to do.”
• Trevor Collins, 18, of Oxford, was sentenced to 10 years probation after pleading guilty to third degree rape – a class E felony – and must register as a sex offender. Collins, in August of 2011, was taken into police custody after he allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old relative without her consent.
Collins had no statement in court on Friday.
• Lance Beckwith, 23, of Norwich, was sentenced to two to four years in state prison after pleading guilty to third degree burglary – a class D felony – following a court-approved furlough. It was alleged that Beckwith, on or about June 14, 2011, unlawfully entered and remained in an unoccupied residence in the Town of North Norwich, where he and another individual stole a number of metal milk cans which they hoped to sell for drug money, according to District Attorney Joseph McBride.
• John E. Bush Sr., 35, of Sherburne, was sentenced to one to three years in state prison after admitting he willfully violated the terms of his probation, which required he successfully complete the county’s treatment court program.
Judge Sullivan at first denied Bush a one-week furlough, requested by the public defender, and said he was unsure if the defendant could keep himself clean and sober for an entire week. The furlough was later granted when Bush offered to pay the full amount of his court-ordered restitution – $150 – despite the objection of the district attorney’s office.
If he were to violate the terms of his release, Bush could face up to two-and-a-third to seven years in state prison.
