Citizens form friends group for NB ambulance
NEW BERLIN – Concerned citizens have formed the Friends of the Village of New Berlin Ambulance Service and will hold a fundraiser on March 3 at the fire house.
The fundraiser will include a barbecue chicken dinner and a raffle in order to raise money to eliminate the $53,000 debt the NBAS is currently struggling to rectify.
According to co-chair of the Friends of the NBAS and former village board member Robert Hewitt, the purpose of the group is to maintain the current village ambulance service which he said has been facing hard times.
“The service went from 12-hour days to 24-hour days to provide more coverage,” he said. “But many things weren’t put together properly and there wasn’t a satisfactory budget.”
Last week, the Columbus town board voted 3-2 to allow Albany attorney Terrence Hannigan begin negotiations with CMT for service instead of the village, which the Town of Columbus has contracted with for the last three years.
Members of the town board said the choice to change service was due to the inaccuracies in the village’s budget and the excessive debt. However, Supervisor Tom Grace said the decision to switch services was not in the overall interest of the town, disagreeing with his trustees.
“I think it’s a travesty to treat our partners this way,” said Grace. “I will do everything in my power to reverse this decision and make sure our residents have the best available local coverage.”
Village Mayor Terry Potter stated that he also supports the village service and he doesn’t believe any one’s been dissatisfied with their service.
“I believe the village provides an excellent service and will continue to do so in the future,” he said.
Hewitt said that the March 3 fundraiser will be the first of many to help put the village service back on track.
“There have been mistakes in the past ... they’ll be rectified in the future,” he said.
