Unadilla Valley 54, Walton 52
WALTON – Unadilla Valley won its first postseason game since the 2007-2008 season Wednesday night, and beat Walton for the third time this season to advance to Section IV Class C quarterfinals.
UV (14-5) used a 12-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to erase Walton’s seven-point lead and open a five-point lead of its own. Jordan Anderson and Amanda Off each made a pair of free throws lifting the lead to 54-49 in the final minute.
“I really thought that when we were down seven, that this could be the end of the season,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “This group definitely wanted it, and all they talked about was going to Watkins Glen (UV’s next opponent). We have a lot of underclassmen, but they looked like a veteran team tonight.”
Anderson scored eight in the final quarter and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Sophomore Taylor Davis scored a game-high 19 for the Storm with Anderson netting 17 and Off tossing in 10 points.
UV plays at Watkins Glen on Saturday.

Marathon 60, Oxford 51
MARATHON – Marathon’s 6-foot-3 senior, Sam Courtney, took charge in the second half and led her club past Oxford in Wednesday’s Class C sectional playoff game.
Courtney was limited to six points in the first half before scoring eight quick points in the third quarter on her way to a 20-point half and 26 for the game. “She’s been around for a while, and I felt we did an excellent job on (Courtney) in the first half,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “I thought that if we could keep that up for four quarters, we had a good chance of winning the game.”
Oxford hit four three-pointers in the last quarter – three from Megan Golden and one from Emily Smith – to avoid a runaway fourth quarter for the Olympians. Marathon helped seal the win finishing 17-for-23 from the foul line in the second half.
Julianne Heggie led Oxford (11-8) with 13 points, while Brooke Noble and Jacquelyn Heggie added 10 apiece. “We had a great group of seniors,” Palmer said of his season. “I would take this group any year in terms of how hard they worked and how well they practiced.”

Poland 43, Otselic Valley 41
UTICA – Otselic Valley’s last-second shot to win the game was off the mark, and the Vikes fell two points short in the Section III Class D playoffs Wednesday night against Poland.
Poland, Section III Class D champions three seasons ago, did not have a single player score in double figures against the Vikings. “We finished the season very well, and the last two games we played very well,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We weren’t able to win the last one, but Poland is a very good ball club, and we have nothing to be ashamed of.”
OV was down by seven at the end of the first quarter, but came on over the last three periods outscoring Poland in each stanza. Gideon Schena paced the Vikings (13-7) scoring 13 points.
“We started slow, but once we got our feet under us, we did all right,” Loomis said. “It just wasn’t enough to pull it off.”

Groton 76, Unadilla Valley 41
GROTON – Groton played to its number one seed pouring it on in the first half to take a 52-15 lead en route to a first-round playoff romp over the Storm Tuesday night.
Keegan Donavan scored 30 points for Groton including six three-pointers, and he had 22 of those points by halftime. “We did not follow our defensive game plan in the first half, we looked to help out inside when we needed to stay out on the shooters,” said UV coach Matt Osborne, whose club finished 8-10 this season. “Groton shot it very well from outside, especially Donavan. He’s not normally their leading scorer and looks to get others involved, but he had a great first quarter.”
While Groton’s offense was piling up the points, the defense was creating turnovers. UV had 16 of its 23 turnovers in the first half when it fell behind by 37. “Their defensive pressure caused a lot of problems, and we had trouble just getting into our halfcourt offense,” Osborne said. “But we finished strong this year winning our last three games, two of those in overtime. We had trouble early in the season finishing games, but we showed that we matured and knew how to handle those situations.”
Justin Hofer led UV with 13 points and Brandon Miles added nine.
