Tornado defense shuts down Dryden

Norwich 43, Dryden 19
NORWICH – Norwich will get another crack at Susquehanna Valley.
The Tornado advanced to the Section IV Class B semifinals where they will host the Sabers Tuesday night after shutting down Dryden Saturday evening at Jack Jones Gymnasium.
NHS was at its best defensively, and sophomore Jennifer Borfitz led the offense scoring a career-high 23 points.
“I thought we got back to switching defenses effectively,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “We did that on a night when Bryn (Loomis) didn’t shoot it that well, and we were still able to go on some good runs offensively.”
Norwich held Dryden without a field goal the final 11 minutes and 21 seconds finishing the game on a 21-2 run. Borfitz hit her fourth three ball of the game to end the third quarter, and her fifth trey of the game began the fourth and lifted Norwich to a 34-17 lead.
The NHS sophomore was 5-for-7 from behind the three-point arc including 3-for-3 in the first half. Cassie Sutton added a three ball in the opening half as Norwich steadily pulled away.
“When Jenni shoots like that, Hailey (Dietrich) plays tough inside, and Bryn shoots it well, I think we’ll be a real tough out,” Bennett said. “We have a lot of kids who do a good job of getting the ball to our shooters and chipping in when they have their opportunity.”
Norwich hosts SV at 6 p.m. in a first of two games hosted by the Tornado. The NHS boys will entertain Oneonta at 7:45 p.m.

Unadilla Valley 44, Watkins Glen 40
WATKINS GLEN – Unadilla Valley is now in uncharted waters after knocking off number two seed Watkins Glen Saturday afternoon.
The Storm’s Amanda Off and Jordan Anderson made three free throws in the last 30 seconds to wrap up the Class C quarterfinals win. UV is now a win away from appearing in its first sectional championship game.
“The girls are so young, and they’ve never seen any of this,” said UV coach Brandi Backus, whose club won its 15th game this season to match the 2003-2004 win total.
Anderson, Off, and Taylor Davis combined for all of UV’s points with Anderson scoring 19, Davis 14, and Off 11.
Davis sparked an early comeback for her team. The Senecas jumped out to a 12-0 lead at the outset, and appeared headed for a blowout win. Davis hit two free throws to end her club’s dry spell, then picked up two steals – and two baskets – to cut the deficit in half in less than a minute. “So many of our shots were in and out at the start of game, and then they fouled us and we finally scored ,” Backus said. “That broke the ice and we were rolling.”
Backus said her team played perhaps its best defensive game of the season, and she didn’t realize that only three of her players scored. “The other girls were doing so much other stuff,” Backus said. “Mikayla Fowler (reserve forward) played incredibly well on defense and had a ton of big rebounds. The other girls just came in and did a good job for us.
“It was just like another team other there. We haven’t been a very good defensive team this season, but (Saturday) night they were all over the place. They were on their toes and their heads were in it.”
UV (15-5) travels to unbeaten Harpursville (20-0) on Wednesday night. Earlier this season, the Hornets’ quick start allowed them to hold off UV’s second-half comeback in a 75-64 victory. “This is the game the girls have talked about,” Backus said. “They said if they could have one game back, this was the one. If we play good defense, it should be a really good game.”
UV: Corrine Izard, 0; Taylor Davis, 5 3-5-14; Amanda Off, 4 3-4-11; Jenn Elliott, 0; Morgan Weidman, 0; Jordan Anderson, 4 10-17-19; Brittany Fairchild, 0; Mikayla Fowler, 0. Totals: 13 16-26-44.

Bainbridge-Guilford 31, Lansing 26
LANSING – Bainbridge-Guilford coach Bob Conway wondered how many nine seeds have beaten the top seed.
The most likely answer: Not many.
Randi Conway scored 11 of her 12 points in the fourth quarter, and she went 4-for-4 from the free throw line late in the game to seal the Bobcats’ Class C playoff victory.
Conway also had two baskets in the fourth, the biggest was a three-pointer that allowed the Bobcats to reclaim the lead, 23-21. Just a possession earlier, Lansing had made one free throw to take its first lead of the game. “When they took that lead, I wasn’t sure how we would react,” Coach Conway said. “Could we answer back and handle the pressure? Randi hitting that big three got us over the hurdle.”
The Bobcats also stymied Lansing’s full-court pressure defense, and made the contest a halfcourt game. With points coming at a premium, B-G senior Shania Vandermark carried her team’s offense scoring 14 points points with all but one of those buckets coming in the first three quarters. Vandermark added 11 rebounds, and Conway handed out five assists to go with her points. Morgan Bullis chipped in with six steals and four rebounds, and wrapped up the scoring with a single free throw at the 12.5 second mark of the fourth quarter.
“We had to handle their pressure,” Conway said. “If we didn’t do that, (Lansing) could have blown us out early. We felt if it was a halfcourt game, we had a chance.”
B-G moves into the sectional semifinals and plays at Elmira Notre Dame Wednesday.
B-G: Shania Vandermark, 4 6-8-14; Randi Conway, 2 7-13-12; Abbey Smith, 1 0-2-2; Morgan Bulllis, 0 1-2-1; Alissa Rivera, 1 0-0-2; Caitlan Vandermark, 0. Totals: 8 14-25-31.
Lansing: Shea McCartney, 1 5-6-7; Maura McCartney, 1 0-0-2; Shana Schaff, 1 0-2-3; Colby McCartney, 2 6-10-10; Carlene Fields, 1 0-0-3; Taylor Policay, 0 1-6-1. Totals: 6 12-24-26.
