UV plants seeds in ag literacy program
NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley Kindergarten students received a special visit from a giant tomato last Wednesday as part of the national Agriculture Literacy reading effort.
UV Board of Education member Victoria Gregory donned the hand-crafted tomato costume, courtesy of Afton seamstress Sindy Bacluska, and sat down with the kindergarten students to discuss the importance of planting seeds in the upstate New York area. Gregory shared stories and read to the students about agriculture and discussed the growth process of the seeds.
“As always, the students enjoyed the visit and the activity,” said kindergarten teacher Lorraine Ruffino.
In addition, Gregory brought tomato seeds for the children to plant in class and monitor for the next few weeks. She said that hopefully each of the plants will grow and give the students a chance to watch the progress in class. Also, each student received a packet of seeds to bring home.
The seeds were donated by Caroline Cower of Afton and came from Page Seed in Greene. Cower donated 100 packets of seeds to be distributed to students of the Afton Central School and Unadilla Valley Central School districts.
