County renews housing contract
NORWICH – In an effort to help people with serious mental illnesses locate mainstream housing, the Chenango County Board of Supervisors renewed a contract for supported housing services from Catholic Charities.
The board approved a 2012 contract for $176,516.
Catholic Charities of Chenango County, located on O’Hara Drive in Norwich, is an organization of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse. It is dedicated to enacting Christ’s teachings by responding to people and their needs, through service, advocacy, convening and empowerment, according to its website.
Individuals receive assistance finding housing, roommates and furniture, and help with initial and ongoing affordability. They may be living in their own apartment or in properties that Catholic Charities rents for them.
The county’s contract is with Chenango County Community Mental Hygiene Services, so individuals are also linked with a comprehensive community support system of case management, mental health, rehabilitation, respite, social, employment and health supports.
Prior to voting on the resolution for renewal, City of Norwich Wards 4,5,6 Supervisor Robert M. Jeffrey asked whether Catholic Charities conducted background checks on the properties to see if they were up to code for occupancy. When campaigning for supervisor last summer, Jeffrey said one of his main objectives was “to improve my neighborhood.”
“I want to see oversight of these places in my ward,” he told Mental Hygiene Services Director Ruth Roberts earlier this year.
Roberts said she would follow up and report back to Jeffrey. However, she told members of the Health and Human Services Committee in January that society no longer institutionalizes the mentally ill.
“Living in the community is challenging, but we try to have the supports in place for these individuals to be more successful,” she said.
