DVD Patrol

Movies have always brought people together in some way. For my Mom and me, that was always the case. My mind is always on the next column and the three-year anniversary of her death was coming up. I started thinking “What can I do for this?” On my days off, I started running across a bunch of movies that we watched together and I decided to bring some movies back around that we liked. Maybe you might have liked them at one time or another. All of them are available on DVD currently. This one is for Mom and I hope some of these might be a few films people may like.

The American President - Mom always liked a good romantic comedy and she always thought Micheal Douglas was cute. Douglas plays President Andrew Shepherd. Being President is a tricky job when everything you do is watched by everyone you work with and the American People too. This couldn’t be more true when he meets Lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Benning). Sydney is a tough cookie and she will make sure she gets her point across when she is doing her job fighting for causes that are important to the Public. A chance meeting surprises her when the President walk into the room. She is embarrassed but Andrew likes what he sees. He decides to invite to a function at the White House and the ball starts rolling from there. Things go well at first but then others that are running for office decide to make Sydney a target to get into the White House. Will this make their romance even harder?

Lethal Weapon 2 - Mom always liked a good action movie too and Mel Gibson was someone she liked too.
Martin Riggs (Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) were two of the toughest cops in Los Angeles and the bad guys didn’t know what they were up against when these two cops crossed their paths. Leo Getz (Joe Pesci) was a witness assigned to them and Leo managed to steal a half billion dollars from a ring of South African terrorists. Martin and Roger are assigned to protect Leo. The longer they protect him, the harder it gets when the people Leo stole money from attempt to kill him. It gets personal for our heroes when the terrorists come after their family and friends. Especially for Martin when he finds out they’re responsible for killing his wife. Will they be able to protect Leo and stop them before it’s too late?

First Blood - Sly Stallone was another one Mom always liked and the Introduction of John Rambo was a great one. John Rambo was a Vietnam Veteran who was moving from place to place trying to put his life back together and started by looking up some old friends. While looking up a friend, he passes through a small town that is overseen by Sheriff Will Teasle (Brian Dennehy). Teale likes to keep law and order his own way and doesn’t want trouble. Rambo doesn’t want any trouble either but the Sheriff and his men take the law out of hand. They push Rambo too far and he escapes. Now he goes on the run and god help anyone who gets in his way. Can Rambo find some justice trying to stop the Sheriif that pushed too hard?

National Lampoon’s Vacation - I remember Mom taking my Sister and me to this movie in the theater. Chevy Chase was a great actor that we always liked.  Chase plays Clark W Griswald. Clark is getting ready to take his wife Ellen (Beverly D’angelo) and his kids Rusty (Anthony Micheal Hall) and Audrey (Dana Barron) on the perfect vacation to Walley World (a Disneyesque theme park in California). Clark is a nice guy but just has bad luck once in a while. His streak of bad luck is about to go all bad when driving out to their favorite spot just keeps going from bad to worse. Is there going to be any good luck in store for Clark and the family?

The Cutting Edge - When I was in college, my Mom and my Aunt Arlene (or as my family like to call ‘Toots”) One lady who is a class act and someone who’s been there for me since Mom passed away. During their trip, they went to see this terrific movie. Some time later, I was able to find it on video for her and she just about wore this movie out. Meet Doug Dorsey (DB Sweeney). Doug was one of the top hockey players in the World until an injury sidelined him with a blind spot. His World changes after he meets Kate Moseley (Moira Kelly). Kate has a bit of an atitude and goes through a lot of partners. Now both of them need each other when they are partnered up to go for an Olympic Gold Metal. Can they become partners without killing each other first?

Next week back to business and some great DVDs are coming with some reviews on the way. Until next time, The Toddster will be here.
