COLUMBUS ­– The Columbus Town Board passed Road Preservation Local Law #1 by a vote of 3-2 Thursday.

The goal of the local law is “to maintain the safety and general welfare of Town residents by preventing damage to and the destruction of the surface, roadbed and ditching of Town roads” primarily due to increased commercial endeavours in the area. Oversight of Local Law #1 was delegated to the town highway superintendent.

The law is not intended to regulate businesses, but to “protect the public right-of-ways from damage.”

The law provides that:

• No construction or reconstruction of any highway access to a town road may be established without obtaining a driveway permit from the town highway superintendent.

• The highway superintendent may impose seasonal restrictions at his discretion.

• Vehicles and equipment may not be located anywhere that would obstruct normal road usage.
