Vibbard named Section 3 Class B coach of year
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s basketball team received a big boost of recognition earlier this month when head varsity coach, Kevin Vibbard, was named the Section III Class B coach of the year.
Vibbard, who has coached the Marauders’ varsity for nine years in two stints, led his club to an unbeaten 10-0 record in Center State Conference division play this past season and the program’s second Section III division title. “I think this is quite an honor for our whole basketball program,” Vibbard said. “The coaches all the way through have done a good job, and our program is now very well respected among Section III coaches. We’re now in the radar instead of under the radar.”
Over the past seven seasons since he returned to coaching the Marauders’ varsity, Vibbard has led S-E to six winning seasons, two Center State Conference division titles, and back-to-back Class B sectional semifinals appearances in 2006 and 2007. Overall, the Marauders have an 86-56 record (.605 win percentage) during Vibbard’s currrent seven-year run.
S-E appears to be in good stead to follow up this year’s performance with CSC player of the year, Austin Jasper, returning along with second team all-star, Sam Caton. Vibbard does lose three seniors to graduation, but should bolster his roster with an influx of players from a 17-1 junior varsity club. “The biggest thing is that kids are really committing to playing in the offseason, and they’re buying into the program,” Vibbard said.
