Ronny Cox, a man of many talents, to appear at 6 On The Square

OXFORD – Many people may remember him portraying the villain in films such as “Robocop,” “Total Recall” and television’s “Stargate” series, not to mention his first time on camera as the guitarist in “Deliverance,” during its unforgettable “dueling banjos” scene. Beginning at 7:30 tonight, however, people will have an opportunity to experience the musical side of Hollywood actor, musician and storyteller Ronny Cox at Oxford’s 6 On The Square.
Tickets for tonight’s show are $25 at the door, and those attending can expect an eclectic blend of southwestern folk music that the Boston Globe called “a study in easygoing amiability and unforced charisma.”
Over the past decade, Cox has evolved from an “actor who sings” into a “singer who happens to have a pretty fair career acting,” according to his biography.
Since 1993, Cox has released six albums, including his debut record, “Ronny Cox,” 2002’s “Cowboy Savant,” 2004’s “Ronny Cox Live” and “At The Sabastiani,” released in 2006. In 2007, Cox was encouraged by friend, producer and musician Jack Williams to release “How I Love Them Old Songs,” a tribute to Texas songwriter Mickey Newbury. His latest release, 2009’s “Songs With Repercussions,” is a “personal studio collection of songs that are mostly selected from other sources,” as well as three original offerings, according to his bio.
“The truly great thing about music is that it’s like a double-edged sword. Songs can be frivolous or sad but they can trigger an almost overwhelming emotion ... immediately,” stated Cox of “Repercussions.” “What I have found is that if I open up to my audience, they not only accept that, they also help me get through it. It is that sharing ... of silliness, or sadness ... or mutual understanding that I find to be very compelling.”
