Eating your way through the alphabet at UV
NEW BERLIN – The Unadilla Valley Central School District held its annual “Alphabet Night” at the school on Tuesday.
The event included booths throughout the hallways containing nutritional facts, healthy food choices and numerous games and entertainment.
“It’s been a great event and it’s been fun seeing the kids enjoy themselves,” said UV Wellness Committee spokesperson Megan Tumilowicz.
Each person who attended received doors prizes such as seed packets from Page’s Seeds, the PTO and the American Dairy Association.
Many of the booths were set up by student organizations and clubs. The Liberty Partnership, for example, offered sparkling juice in the cafeteria as an alternative to sugary energy drinks. Liberty Partnership is a support system at the school for students at risk.
“This is a huge event; there are tons of people and it’s a great opportunity for students and faculty,” said Stacy Jenne, who works for Liberty Partnership at the Unadilla Valley Central School.
Four farms also set up booths at the event providing samples of their various products and offering information about the healthy options available from local farmers.
The cafeteria also took part in the smorgasbord of healthy food, providing chicken parmesan and pizza made with whole wheat bread and other healthy alternatives. A fruit and pecan salad was also available as well as a variety of fruit.
“Many schools wouldn’t focus on the healthy parts of each lunch,” said BOCES Cafeteria Manager Kip Cruise. “We make sure that there’s at least one vegetable and fruit item for every lunch, as well as our fat-free and reduced fat options.”
“The whole point is to explain the ABC’s of being healthy and active,” said Tumilowicz.
