Works of Johanna Lerwick featured at Norwich gallery

NORWICH – The Jill Kraft Gallery of Norwich is pleased to announce the beginning of the 2012 artist season.
The Gallery will open its season with local wildlife artist, Johanna Lerwick Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Artists’ Palette of Norwich. Lerwick will be exhibiting and selling medium to large scale wildlife original artwork and prints. The show is open to the public and will be available for viewing from March 31 through May 14. The Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m and Saturday’s 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Whether it is capturing a wolf in an element of surprise, or a deer in the midst of an evening walk, when painting, Lerwick aims not only to capture these scenes but ultimately bring them to life.
Lerwick explains she has had a passion for wildlife since she was a small child.
“I grew up on a farm,” she says, “and I have never been scared of any kind of animal. Long before I knew I would become a professional painter, I knew animals would play a role in my life.”
The beginning of Lerwick’s artistic journey began in her mid- twenties when she traveled to Guam and began to pick up the trades of photography. After returning to the United States she began dabbling with pen and ink and started reading some “how to” books about painting techniques using acrylic and oil mediums. She says it wasn’t right away though that she took her ability to paint to the next level. She says she enjoyed doing art, but decided to step away from it and venture elsewhere. Those ventures took her to Africa on Safari, to the depths of the Amazon, across the United States, and finally home again to upstate New York.
After returning to her roots Lerwick decided to pick back up her brushes and begin what has turned into her biggest passion in life.
Since 1992, Lerwick has produced over 100 oil paintings and has been showing her work throughout the upstate New York region for the past 10 years. Lerwick’s work has been on display inside the community gallery space at The Artists Palette in Norwich since 2010 and this will be her first solo showing in the area. She is currently producing up to 10 new pieces of work each year and in addition to her wildlife work, Lerwick accepts commissioned work upon request. Throughout the past year the artist has donated her time and talents to the efforts of the Wolf Mountain Nature Center of Smyrna. Lerwick will be showcasing limited edition prints of some of her recent work which captures some of the animals residing at the Nature Center. A portion of the proceeds of selected items will be donated to the center. Lerwick’s work can be viewed at johannalerwick.com and online at Fine Art America, Johanna-lerwick.artistwebsites.com.
