VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Three Chenango County freshman wrestlers were named freshman all-Americans after placing in the top eight in their weight classes at the National High School Coaches Association High School Wrestling Freshman Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va. this past weekend.
Four Hundred Forty Nine of the nation’s top freshman wrestlers, including 31 state champions from 18 different states, took part in the three-day event.
Heralded Norwich freshman, Tristan Rifanburg, who two years ago became the first seventh grader in New York state history to win a state championship, added to his long list of accomplishments with a runner-up finish in the 126-pound weight class. . Rifanburg ripped off five consecutive wins in the 40-wrestler weight class, including a 3-2 decision over New Jersey state place winner Michael Monica in the semifinals, to reach the championship bout. Rifanburg ran out of steam in the championship finals, falling 8-3 to Virginia state champion Neal Richards.
Sherburne-Earlville freshman Garrett DuVall earned all-American status by virtue of his sixth-place finish in the 182-pound division. DuVall rebounded from a 3-2 opening round loss to Virginia’s Austin Knies rattling off four straight wins, including two by fall, to place sixth in the prestigious event.
Chenango County’s third all-American honors went to S-E freshman Cody Marshall, who took home an eighth-place finish in the stacked 195-pound weight class.
