Early morning blaze destroys Greene home
GREENE – Smoke rising hundreds of feet into the sky could be seen for miles along State Highway 12 following an early morning house fire on McLane Lane – a private entry off the main route – in the Town of Greene, south of the village.
Fire and emergency personnel from the Greene, Brisben, Coventry and Smithville fire departments all responded to the blaze, which was first reported at 5:33 a.m.
The Broome County fire departments of Triangle, Chenango Forks and Chenango Bridge also responded.
Greene’s First Assistant Chief Mark Colwell said the rear of the residence was in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene, from the structure’s basement to its roof. The homeowner, whose name was not released, and a number of pets – including birds, dogs and cats – were all evacuated safely. Only one cat was unaccounted for, and the house itself was completely destroyed.
“Between all the department members and mutual aid companies ... they did a great stop, but the house is still a complete loss,” reported Colwell, who added the most important thing was that “everyone is safe.”
The blaze shut down traffic along State Highway 12 between Chenango Forks and the Village of Greene for more than two hours as firefighters brought it under control. The cause of the fire was unknown as of press time and is still being investigated.
