Otsego Land Trust offers photo contest

CHENANGO COUNTY – The Otsego Land Trust and Otsego Lake Association are co-sponsoring their third annual photo contest titled “Water, Water Everywhere” for Otsego County and neighboring towns in Chenango County.
According to Marcie Foster, outreach coordinator for Otsego Land Trust, the contest is designed to emphasize the “importance of water in the lives of people, plants and animals.”
The required subject of submissions is fairly broad, said Foster, although photos of outdoor water sources from the Otsego region and parts of eastern Chenango County are encouraged.
Streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, springs and wetlands are just a few of the suggested topics participants might consider, she explained. Any outdoor photos “depicting the abundance of water in our region” are eligible. Kitchen sinks and/or bathtubs are not.
“We’d like to get as many participants as possible to really promote the Otsego Lake Watershed and the overall importance of keeping our upstate New York water sources clean and beautiful,” said Foster.
Up to three photos may be submitted and one photograph will be selected from each of three categories: professional, amateur and youth. The youth bracket will include photographers 16 and under.
Entries must be received or postmarked by Dec. 31 and only digital photos in .jpg format will be accepted. Submissions will be consider by a panel of judges selected by the Otsego Land Trust and Otsego Lake Association. Winners will be announced in early 2013.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category and were provided by the Otsego Lake Association.
The “professional” prize will be a gift certificate to the Blue Mingo Grill and a copy of Richard Duncan’s book, “Otsego Lake - Past and Present.” The “amateur” prize will be a guided tour of Otsego Lake for the winner and five guests. Finally, the winner of the “youth” category will receive four tickets for the Glimmerglass Queen Lake Tour and a one year family membership to the Otsego Lake Association.
Photographs may be sent electronically to marcie@otsegolandtrust.org Hard disks may be mailed to Otsego Land Trust Water Photos, PO Box 173, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or dropped off at the Land Trust Offices at Pioneer Alley, 101 Main St., Cooperstown.
To receive further guidelines for the competition, additional information and entry forms, visit otsegolandtrust.org or contact Foster at 547-2366.
Photos from the two previous competitions will be on display at the Smithy Gallery in Cooperstown on May 21.
“We’re trilled to be co-sponsoring this event,” said Foster. “It’s a wonderful opportunity.”
