An evening of music with Mazz Swift at 6OTS
OXFORD – Tonight at 7:30 p.m., 6 On The Square (6OTS) is proud to present violinist, vocalist, composer, Mazz Swift. It’s difficult to describe Mazz’s music because she plays such an amazing variety of styles. From classical to rock, to traditional folk music from around the world (specializing in Irish music), to hip hop, and jazz (free and composed), the highly talented Mazz plays it all and plays it best. When performing solo she uses the name MazzMuse, but by any name what remains constant is that she is a most extraordinary violinist. Mazz brings her passion for creating true compositions to audiences and 6OTS is very pleased to bring her to you.
Swift, a native New Yorker, began playing the violin at age 6, studying with Elisabeth Small, Shirley Givens and Timothy Baker. Mazz graduated from the High School of the Performing Arts, during which time she made her solo public performance debut on the stage of New York’s Alice Tully Hall, performing alongside members of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. She later attended The Juilliard School of Music, studying under Stephen Clapp, but left in the middle of her third year in order to pursue a more organic approach to music making.
Mazz’s diverse musical interests have led her in many different directions, and her broad talent has enabled her to compliment a wide variety of artists. She has recorded and performed with Perry Farrell, Moby, Vernon Reid and DJ Logic (The Yohimbe Brothers), Burnt Sugar and many artists from the Black Rock Coalition, Suphala, Kanye West, Common and Jay-Z.
Lucid Culture wrote, “[Mazz Swift is], a gifted, fiery violinist with a casually soulful vocal delivery, her strongest suit is her tersely crystallized songwriting and particularly her lyrics.”
Mazz can be found performing all over the US and Europe and is based in New York City where she divided her time between: Brazz Tree (Mazz and guitarist Brad Hammonds), Trigger (pop rock with a heavy influence of Irish music) and The Spondoolix (traditional with a focus on Irish/Scottish music).
Some of Mazz’s career highlights from just last year include playing for the 20th Annual Keepers of the Dream Awards, where President Obama spoke. Also, she performed solo on the Today Show playing with (the late) Whitney Houston.
While you’re there, or before the show (starting at 6:30 p.m.), don’t miss the opportunity to see David M. Geer’s scenic oil paintings now through April 30.
6OTS is located at 6 LaFayette Park in downtown Oxford. Phone: 843-OTS6 (6876).
