Golf tournament to raise money for suicide prevention walk
OXFORD – Team Chenango for Suicide Prevention and Awareness will hold a golf tournament May 6 to raise money for the Overnight Walk, held June 9 and 10 in San Francisco.
The golf tournament will begin at noon at the Bluestone Golf Course in Oxford. The cost of the tournament will be $55 per person. Teams can sign up by contacting Danielle Marshman at 843-2663.
Marshman created Team Chenango two years ago to walk in the annual overnight rally. She said she was motivated to enlighten people about the tragedy of suicide after she lost her father in 2001.
“It’s such a sad thing to lose someone like that,” said Marshman. “People don’t know how to react and it hurts the families.”
Following the tournament, there will be a dinner of baked ziti that is open to the public, with spaghetti sauce provided by Sue Franco, who is also a survivor. Goodwill donations are welcome, added Marshman.
In keeping with the spirit of Team Chenango, there will be a variety of gift baskets to be raffled off with various Chenango County themes. Marshman said there will be a basket for each town in the county as well as baskets from “Chenango Authors,” “Chenango Musicians” and “Chenango Theater.”
The town baskets will include everything needed for “A Day on the Town,” such as restaurant and gift shop certificates. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.
Marshman explained that the money raised at the tournament will help fund the eight person Team Chenango’s trip to San Francisco for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention annual Overnight walk.
“The theme this year is “Out of the Darkness.”
“That’s what we’re trying to do here ... we’re trying to bring Chenango out of the darkness and help so that suicide does not happen at all,” said Marshman.
Each person on the team has to raise $1,000 in order to walk, she explained. This will be Marshman’s third year walking and the second for Team Chenango.
“The first year was in Boston and last year was in New York City ... so this is quite the journey this year and why we’re trying to raise so much money,” she said.
There will also be a banner at the tournament for people to sign and write support for Team Chenango. The banner will accompany the eight walkers on their trip.
