BID seeks volunteers to help spruce up downtown
NORWICH – The Norwich Business Improvement District is calling on city residents, volunteers and organizations to lend a hand as it takes strides in beautifying the downtown area during the annual Main Street Sweep.
The event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 5. Any and all volunteers are welcome to join when the group meets in the parking lot at the former location of the Dollar Tree, across from NBT on South Broad Street.
Tasks on the to-do list include: Pulling weeds along the edges of sidewalks; picking up trash and cigarette butts cluttering the grass and walkways; sweeping parking lots; and washing windows of vacant storefronts throughout the main business district in downtown Norwich.
This spring marks the seventh year the BID has called on volunteers to show a little pride in their city during the Main Street Sweep. The event, which only in recent years has become a Saturday morning tradition, has brought out the quality and cleanliness in a number of volunteers in the past and hopes are that more volunteers and local organizations will pitch in this year to make things sparkle and shine before the Norwich Merchants Association hosts its first Craft Fair along Main Street on May 12.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for service organizations, school and church groups, and other members of the community at large to pitch in and spruce up our downtown before the summer events kick-off,” said BID Director Roz DeRensis. “With enough volunteers, we hope to cover the whole downtown area.”
May is a busy month for the BID, DeRensis said. In addition to the Norwich Merchants Crafts Fair, the BID will also be sponsoring the annual pre-Memorial Day Cruise-In on May 25.
Work attire (including work gloves) is recommended. Cleaning supplies and disposable gloves will be provided by the BID. For more information, contact DeRensis at 336-1811.
