Smith hits walk-off homer in UV victory over Hancock

Unadilla Valley 10, Hancock 9
NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley senior Brett Smith broke a 9-9 tie in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off homer as Unadilla Valley rallied from a early deficit to defeat defending Section IV Class D champion Hancock Thursday afternoon.
Smith, down to his last strike with a 1-2 count, connected on a fastball that richocheted over the outfielder’s head for the easy round-tripper. Smith also pitched four innings of relief to earn the victory.
“Brett really carried us with his bat and his pitching, plus I felt we played some pretty decent defense from the mid innings and on,” said UV coach Gary Alford. “The boys never gave in.”
Hancock led 5-0 after two innings scoring on five basehits and two walks.
UV jumped back into the game scoring five runs in the fifth. Jesse Ranger had a two-run single, Kurt Haycook added an RBI, and Smith scored Haycook with a sacrifice fly.
UV (4-1) is at Afton Monday.

Oxford 13, Harpursville 10
HARPURSVILLE – Oxford completed a perfect 3-0 week and nudged its way back to the .500 mark rallying to beat Harpursville Thursday afternoon.
Adam Pierson’s RBI single scored Matt Moore with the tying run in the seventh. Andrew Golden followed with a two-run single, and Eric Dilfer added insurance with an RBI.
