Norwich 4, Seton Catholic Central 3
NORWICH – Norwich defeated Seton Catholic Central for the first time in 20 years, and dealt the Saints their first Southern Tier Athletic Conference loss in over a year, Friday at Norwich High School.
With three points already in the bank, Norwich needed a win from either its first, second or fourth singles players to secure the victory.
Matt Craig, playing second singles, made a dramatic third-set rally to secure the decisive team point. Craig won his opening set against Dan Hackford, 7-5, but lost the momentum giving up a 4-2 lead in the second set to set up a final set super tiebreaker with the first person to 10 points capturing the set.
Hackford built on his strong finish in the second game, and had led 6-2 in the tiebreaker before Craig won eight of last nine points to come from behind for the 10-7 win. “Matt’s play didn’t change when he got behind. He stuck to his game plan and continued to play the same way,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “That’s a rare thing to see. He understood the importance of the match, and to rise up when he was down…this was probably one the best regular season matches I’ve been a part of.”
Norwich also received wins from Colin Stewart, who stayed unbeaten at 5-0 in singles play. Sal Cole and Roman Cwynar were victorious at first doubles, while the third doubles tandem, Linus Impolis and Brendan Budd, won in straight sets.
With the victory, Norwich jumps back into the STAC Central Division race and remains a single game behind Owego. The Indians still have to play Seton Catholic Central, and the Tornado have a return meeting with Owego later this season. “We said coming into the match, let’s do the extraordinary, not the ordinary,” Stewart said. “We’re not in the driver’s seat (in the division), but we’re back riding shotgun.”
