Norwich junior wrestlers qualify for Eastern Nationals
NORWICH – The Norwich junior wrestling team will send nine boys to the Eastern National Champions at the Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury, Maryland May 5-6.
Ty Rifanburg, Tristan Rifanburg, Cody Bradbury, Nick Murphy, Brennan Slater, James Jones, Eli Rodriguez, Mikey Squiers, Troy Spratley, Brendan Gager, and Frankie Garcia all earned qualifying spots earlier this month in Shamokin, Pa.
“This is a monumental accomplishment for our program,” said Norwich High School varsity coach Joe Downey, who coached Tristan Rifanburg, Bradbury, and Garcia this past season. “We have never had this many wrestlers qualify for a national wrestling tournament. We have high expectations for all of our wrestlers that are at the national wrestling Tournament to meet their goals that they made in the beginning of this season. It would be nice to have a couple of All-Americans in our program.”
The junior wrestler team’s booster club is also currently collecting recyclable bottles and cans to help offset the costs of travel. The Norwich boosters support athletes by paying for entry fees, lodging, and other associated costs for the kids traveling to the tournament. Those who wish to donate for the bottle and can drive may contact Jennifer Rice at 336-3614 or drop off recyclables at 170 Warner Road in Norwich.
