RSVP presents seminar for seniors Friday
NORWICH – The final seminar of a five-part series put on by the Chenango County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Guernsey Memorial Library in Norwich.
The program was created to inform senior citizens about ways to keep themselves safe and healthy over time, said RSVP organizer Sasha Shackelton, and was made possible by a grant from the Norwich Youth Philanthropy Council.
“One of the biggest concerns for the elderly is keeping busy,” she said.
The final program will be held in three parts. At 1:30, Renee Conklin coordinator of elder services at the Decker School of Nursing, will discuss “Normal Aging or Dementia” which will focus on helping seniors understand the natural changes in everyone’s mind as they grow older.
Dorothy Gardner, who presented at the previous seminar, will return to explain “Aging and Ears and Eyes.”
“As we age there are subtle changes that occur that everyone should be aware of,” she explained.
Finally, professional organizer Merrie Warner will give a presentation called “Tips on Organizing Your ‘Stuff’ and Your Life.”
The program is open at no cost to Chenango residents over 60, said Shackelton.
“We’ve had very good turnouts at our previous seminars,” said Linda Campbell, RSVP program director. “But we want to get the word out so as many people as possible can benefit from this information.”
Previous topics have included topics ranging from avoiding internet and phone scams to laughter as “the best medicine.” They have been hosted in New Berlin, Bainbridge, Greene and Sherburne.
“We’ve tried to host them at different locations for those who don’t want to or cannot travel as far,” said Campbell.
Door prizes will be awarded for attendees and light refreshments served during the course of the program.
