Ilion 1, Sherburne-Earlville 0
ILION – Sherburne-Earlville dropped back a game in the Center State Conference losing a pitching duel Thursday afternoon.
S-E starter Matt Smith was the hard-luck loser giving up just three hits. He struck out four and walked one. His counterpart, Brian Maine, gave up seven S-E hits and struck out six. “He threw wonderful today, and he only used 78 pitches,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks of Smith. “I bet he’s given up only seven hits all season.”
The Tigers manufactured the lone run of the game with fundamental baseball. Tim Nicolette led off the game with single, moved to second on a stolen base, was sacrificed to third, and scored on an RBI groundout.
S-E left 10 runners on base and had runners in scoring position multiple times. “They very seldom make errors and are just that good,” Hicks said of Ilion. “We had at least two good hits that were robbed after they made great plays.”
S-E hosts Hamilton today.

Milford 9, G-MU 7
MILFORD – Milford gave up an early 4-1 lead to G-MU, but reclaimed the advantage with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to turn back the Raiders Thursday.
Peyton Griffith gave up just three hits in six innings to pick up the win. Griffith also had a double and triple.
“Our youth shows through a lot, but we competed well today,” said G-MU coach Rick Mohrein. “Milford leads on the other side of the league and hasn’t lost a game yet.”
DeMario Reed scored three runs and stole five bases to lead the Raiders, who host Richfield Springs on Monday.

Hancock 10, Greene 1
GREENE – Hancock starting pitcher Cole Duston allowed just three infield hits to Greene Thursday, and the Wildcats made it a lopsided final with six runs in the top of the seventh.
“We had two errors and two batter hit by a pitch, and that compounded things in the last inning,” said Greene coach Steve Burghardt. “It’s been tough the last two days with the way we’re swinging the bats. We’re putting too much pressure on our defense and pitching.”
Todd Wainman had three hits to lead Hancock. Greene (5-7) is at Bainbridge-Guilford today.

Windsor 9, Norwich 1
NORWICH – Defending state champion Windsor pulled away from Norwich with two runs in each of the last three innings in Thursday’s road victory.
Kelly Costello led off the game with a solo homer, and led Windsor with two hits and four runs scored. Norwich was hurt by 11 base on balls, although its pitcher, Jaime Berger, also had 12 strikeouts. “They have it all. They can bunt, hit the long ball, they have speed...and their middle infield is tough,” said Norwich coach Scott Moore. “Their shortstop and second baseman have got to be the toughest in STAC.”
Berger was 2-for-3 for Norwich and scored Norwich’s lone run on a Shannon Moore double.

G-MU 9, Milford 7 (8 innings)
MILFORD – G-MU rallied for four runs in the seventh to tie the game and went ahead in the eighth with two more tallies to defeat Milford Thursday.
Milford, for its part, nearly equalled G-MU’s eighth-inning heroics with the first two batters reaching on an error and a doubl. G-MU pitcher Jenny Mason induced a double play when a line drive was caught by first baseman Logan Eltz, who fired to third baseman Shelby Hartwell for the second out. Whitney Gilbert fielded a hard grounder at second and threw to Eltz for the final out.
“Their last at-bat was almost identical to two years ago at Milford,” said G-MU coach Tina Cole as she recounted a deja vu moment. “They put the first two runners on that time, and ended up winning the game. I was on the bench thinking it was happening again, but our girls pulled it out. All of the little pieces came together.”
Alicia Sebeck had the lone RBI hit for G-MU over the last two innings. The other five runs all came in on passed balls, Cole said. “It was just heads-up baserunning scoring on those passed balls,” Cole said. “We didn’t hit the ball as well tonight, but we found a way to win.”
G-MU hosts Richfield Springs Monday.
