Treasures abound at Greene Flea and Farmer’s Market

GREENE – Everything from gold watches to gardening tools are available at the Greene Flea and Farmer’s Market that is now underway every Saturday through October.
This will be the second year of the flea market, but the first full year located across from the Great American, reported Wess Van Voorhies, event coordinator and radio personality. The event was previously held at the ball flats.
“We approached the Great American looking to do more things at that end of town and they were thrilled,” said Voorhies. “It’s a win-win for everyone involved ... there’s a lot more activity around that area and we absolutely love it there.”
Knick-knacks and kitsch aren’t the only things available at this flea market – although there’s enough of that as well, said Voorhies.
“We were looking to do creative, out-of-the-box kind of stuff,” said Voorhies. “So people could show up week after week and always be surprised.”
The market is set up each weekend in the parking lot across from the Great American in downtown Greene.
Although the event began on April 14, this Saturday will be the official grand opening with more vendors, entertainment and food to kick off the season, rain or shine.
Voorhies said Greene high school students have created their own section of the flea market where they have collected items to sell as part of their annual fundraiser.
“People around town needed something else to do on the weekend,” said Voorhies, who has co-organized other events in the past including the Greene Cruise-In and Floodfest Greene. “It’s a good way to bring people out and get the community together.”
Saturday will see one surprise performer and D.J. Mikey G pumping out the jams for people to listen to while they shop, trade or sell. However, Voorhies said numerous bands including Brian Jennings, Just Passin’ Thru and Distant Thunder have expressed interest in playing future events.
In addition, many ideas have been passed around, he said, regarding gold sales, tool sales and other special event days that will give visitors something new to experience each time.
Voorhies even suggested a wine-tasting may occur in the coming months.
Hours for the event will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Interested vendors can contact Voorhies at 725-1446 for more information.
“We’ll have old stuff, new stuff ... bargains every week,” he said. “There will always be surprises but for sure, everything’s affordable.”
