OWEGO – Norwich sophomore Matt Murray broke a 20-year-old school record, and had a hand in shattering a 28-year-old school mark in the Tornado’s sweep of Owego Tuesday afternoon.
Murray, who just recently started running the 200-meter dash, won in 22.6 seconds to break Jason Morris’ mark of 22.7 seconds set in 1992. Murray also ran the anchor leg in the record-breaking 3,200-meter relay behind Jamie Zieno, John Mooney, and Nate Ashton. The quartet finished in 8:23.8 to break the 1984 record by nearly three seconds.
“I really didn’t expect to break the relay record tonight, I just told them to go out and beat Owego,” said Norwich coach Shaun Horan. “Owego was neck and neck with us until Matt got the baton, and even then, we didn’t beat them by much. It was a really good race.”
Ashton and Murray had four overall wins on the day. Ashton also took the 400-meter hurdles and pole vault. Murray was a winner in the 800 meters, and each athlete took part in two victorious relays.
Norwich’s girls dominated the field with one-through-three sweeps in four events.
Morgan Hagenbuch and Brooke Bonney each had two individual-event victories. “It was only a one-point difference in the track events, but Owego was missing a lot of girls in the field events,” Horan said. “That was the big difference.”
Norwich hosts the REK Invitational on Friday.

BAINBRIDGE – Taylor Ellis extended her torrid hitting streak to 11 hits in 11 straight at-bats finishing 5-for-5 with seven RBI in the Trojans’ win over B-G in five innings Tuesday.
Ellis had two doubles among her hits. Winning pitcher Rebecca Hanrahan added a 4-for-5 day with five RBI, Shawn Ayers was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and Morgan Ellis also had three hits in five trips to the plate. “We’re kind of playing a different version of small ball,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “When we get into the power game, we pop it up a lot. We’re staying disciplined at the plate and staying solid through the hitting zone.”
B-G broke up the shutout with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Randi Conway had a two-run single. “We knew we had to get 20 runs to tie it, and that probably wasn’t going to happen,” said B-G coach Cindy Cifone. “My kids didn’t quit, and we did get three runs in the last inning.”
B-G plays at Unadilla Valley today; Greene hosts Oxford Friday.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Brookfield and Otselic Valley split a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon with the Vikes rallying with back-to-back five-run innings to win its game, while Brookfield erased a 2-1 deficit with four runs in the third to avenge that defeat.
Every Vikings player had at least one hit in its win with Ronnie Hines, Susan Graham, and Shelby Hillman all collecting two hits apiece. Hope Reynolds and Graham led the way with two RBI apiece.
Alyssa Worden was a perfect 3-for-3 with two ribbies lifting the Lady Beavers to a split.
Hines was 2-for-2 and drove in both Vikings runs in the loss.

Kayla Nelson singled, stole four bases in the game, and scored S-E’s lone run of the game. Cori Bergeron had S-E’s other basehit.

Dan Dey shared overall medalist honors and led Oxford with a 39. Justin Schray (41) and Chris Marks (42) were next for Oxford. The Blackhawks’ top three players held a 13-shot advantage of Walton’s top three.
The Blackhawks (4-1-1) host Delhi on Thursday.
