Colorscape Chenango artists juried, selected

NORWICH – Just a couple of open spaces remain for art exhibitors at the 18th Annual Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival coming up Sept. 8-9 in downtown Norwich.
After jurying on March 29, 107 new and returning artists and fine crafters were selected to exhibit their wares for sale. There were 141 applications in total, with 61 of them jury-exempt because they were 2011 award winners and long-time exhibitors.
Exhibitor and jury member Diana Tillotson of Riverstone Glass Studio in Endicott said to expect exciting new potters and fiber artists in addition to old favorites at the popular show. The jury studied submitted works in clay, fiber, photography, painting, mixed media and glass.
“It’s going to be wonderful this year. It was difficult to judge. Laying them all out in the parks is going to be a nightmare,” she said.
Tillotson was a juror along with June Tyler, a paper maker from Norwich, and Steve Joslyn, a blacksmith from Smyrna. All three have exhibited at Colorscape in the past or are currently doing so, so they are called peer jurors.
“To avoid any appearance of conflict, they are not eligible for awards while they serve as jurors,” said Colorscape Director Peggy Finnegan. Judges view work at the festival and are responsible for distribution of awards at the Sunday breakfast.

Applications for Colorscape’s Francis K. Wilcox Emerging Young Artist scholarship award has been extended to May 31. Golden Artist Colors will also donate $100 gift certificates to two students of Chenango County schools.
Ken Millet of Night Eagle Productions is once again in charge of arranging Colorscape’s musical lineup. Finnegan said details aren’t completed, but festival goers can expect “top national and international recording artists to grace the Colorscape stage.”
Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival is a juried outdoor exhibition of fine arts and crafts. Organizers are dedicated to providing a show of the highest quality in an interactive atmosphere featuring demonstrations, educational activities, live musical entertainment, a competitive poetry slam, and creative food vending. Colorscape attracts an estimated 14-16,000 visitors each year. Admission and all activities are free.
