Child Advocacy Center applauded during open house

NORWICH – April was nationally recognized as Child Abuse Protection Month and as part of an outreach effort to the community, the Child Advocacy Center of Chenango County hosted its first open house Friday at its new location on 8 Silver St.
“We wanted folks from the community to take a look at what we do here,” explained CAC Supervisor Mike Middaugh. “The whole event went very well. I would like to thank everyone who came out to support us and we look forward to the next year servicing the community.”
“The center’s success is the direct result of the combination of community efforts and all the staff who work with the center,” said CAC Director Daniel Auwarter. “I’m incredibly proud to be here at the center and to work with such talented people.”
A letter of praise for the CAC written by U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was read to the nearly 50 people who attended.
“The CAC is a shining example of civic leadership and the power of our citizens to educate and enrich our communities,” wrote Gillibrand. Child Abuse Prevention Month is a chance to fulfill obligations to prevent child abuse, she said, and “child advocacy centers have been paramount in these efforts and the impact of their work is evident.”
A proclamation from Norwich Mayor Joseph Maiurano commended the center for its National Children’s Alliance accreditation, its Tier 1 designation from the NYS Office of Children and Family Services, and its one-year anniversary at its current location.
Also, after weeks of reviewing different CAC logo designs submitted by high school students from all around Chenango County, Oxford Academy sophomore Evelyn Johnson’s design was unveiled Friday evening as the chosen logo that will now represent the center.
