Fire destroys McDonough camp

McDONOUGH – Fire and emergency personnel from multiple districts across the county responded to a fully involved structure fire Wednesday night that completely destroyed a camp at 145 East Shore Lane on Genegantslet Lake.
The blaze was reported at approximately 6:20 p.m., and it was unknown at first whether the camp’s owner – whose name was not released – was trapped inside, said McDonough Fire Chief Donald Granger. According to the owner’s wife, if her husband’s truck were there, chances were he was in the camp. Luckily, said Granger, that was not the case.
“We were worried that he was trapped and had to assume that he was inside the building. If he had been inside the structure, he would not have survived,” said the fire chief, who was first on the scene. “It was that intense of a fire ... there was that much heat.”
The camp’s owner, it turns out, was with a nearby friend and arrived as firefighters were battling the blaze, said Granger. Fire and emergency personnel were on the scene for three and a half to four hours.
Fire departments out of McDonough, Oxford, Norwich, Smithville and Pharsalia all responded, with additional assistance provided by the Sherburne-based Rapid Intervention Team and the Chenango County Fire Investigation Unit.
