Friends of Rogers ready for Earth Fest

SHERBURNE – A day of fun and celebration of nature is in store for this Saturday, when Friends of Rogers hosts its annual Earth Fest.
Earth Fest will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Rogers Environmental Education Center, St. Hwy. 80 in Sherburne.
This annual event promises something for everyone. Visitors can try their hand at kayaking or canoeing on the Cunningham Ice Pond, learn how to tie flies and cast them, build a bluebird box, and learn about the importance of recycling and conserving energy.
Additionally, information will be available for anyone interested in home solar energy systems or other simple ways of saving money and energy while also improving the health of the planet.
Artists and woodworkers will be there to showcase their love of the natural world through their artwork. Other exhibitors will share their knowledge of butterflies, gardening, fishing, hiking, astronomy, farming, birding, composting and geocaching. For $10, visitors can take home their own bluebird box or leave with a butterfly feeder for $5.
Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at picnic tables on the Rogers Center grounds or food will be available to purchase.
“We’re very excited about it and we’re looking forward to a lot of people coming out,” said FOR coordinator Cara Sefchick.
Last year’s Earth Fest was a huge success for the non-profit organization. Earth Fest 2011 was FOR’s first public event since the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation closed the doors of the Rogers Visitor Center and eliminated education staff at the end of 2010. The event brought in a record crowd of more than 850 people.
One year later, FOR maintains the same sense of enthusiasm, Sefchick said.
“This was our first public event a year ago and the fact that we are going to do it again shows that we’ve made some great strides. There’s still just as much excitement because the fact that we’re able to do it this year is just as important.”
This will be the fourth large event of 2012 hosted by FOR. These events help support FOR in operating the Rogers Environmental Education Center. As FOR explores various options for funding, annual events like Earth Fest remain an important part of Rogers traditions.
