Relay For Life committee to hold team captain’s meeting

NORWICH – The Chenango Relay For Life committee will hold an important team captain’s meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Morrisville State College Norwich Campus community room, 20 Conkey Ave.
According to Relay co-chair Marie DeSarro, team captains should plan on attending each and every meeting leading up to the July 20 Relay For Life. As Relay approaches, she added, it’s typical for new information to be released and reviewed. Team captains unable to attend the monthly meeting should send a team representative in their stead.
“We’re really trying to reach to all corners of the county to raise awareness for the upcoming Relay For Life event in July,” said DeSarro. “For those of us heavily involved ... we sometimes forget that not everyone knows and understands what Relay For Life is all about. We want to encourage everyone in the county to become aware of the event.”
The money raised through Relay, she added, is used by the American Cancer Society for cancer research and development, as well as a number of programs that provide support to cancer patients and their families.
Said DeSarro, “Every year, it becomes more important to promote awareness [for Relay] as more people become diagnosed with this terrible disease.”
This year’s Relay For Life is being dedicated to the memory of committee member Wendie Hutchings, who passed away unexpectedly April 3. And while Hutchings did not pass from cancer, she was “every bit as involved and passionate about the cause,” said DeSarro.
Relay’s most recent event, last week’s Paint the County Purple, has grown in the past two years to include businesses, organizations, schools and individuals countywide because of Hutchings’ hard work and dedication to the cause, she added.
“She wanted to reach out to more people ... which is why she went out last year to all of the restaurants across the county,” said DeSarro. “She dug into her own pocket to purchase purple placemats that restaurants around the county put out last year. In one of her last dedicated acts to our event, Wendie had just purchased purple placemats for this year’s Paint the County Purple.”
Last year’s Relay For Life of Chenango County brought in more than $155,000 for the fight against cancer. For more information visit relayforlife.org/chenangocountyny.
