UV discusses options moving forward after failed budget

NEW BERLIN – Last night, the Unadilla Valley Board of Education discussed its failed budget and options for proceeding in the future. The board will have a chance, if they choose, to put the same budget or a revised one up for vote on June 19.
“We’re disappointed that the budget did not pass with the super-majority,” said Board President Brian Burchill. “We have a lot of work to do before the 19th, and we’ll be establishing more meetings before then.”
Although the meeting was short, the board did open the floor to public comment:
“It could be as simple as not adding any new positions and keep the tax levy at zero percent,” said South New Berlin resident David Dibbell. “And there needs to be a change in the vocabulary that we hear said in newspapers and newsletters concerning the conditions and a narrative of grievance and injustice.”
The budget presented on Tuesday represented slightly more than $20.1 million and a 4 percent tax levy increase, the first in three years. Since the tax levy was above the 2 percent tax cap, a majority by 60 percent was required to pass.
Superintendent Robert Mackey said in an interview on Wednesday that the board would work hard to find a budget that would not lay off staff or reduce non-mandatory programs, such as sports and clubs.
