Two sentenced, one pleads not guilty in county court
NORWICH – A pair of individuals indicted on felony charges pleaded guilty in county court Friday, while an already convicted and incarcerated sex offender pleaded not guilty to a sex crime charge.
• Charles F. Cahill, 43, of Norwich, pleaded guilty to third degree burglary and was sentenced to two and a third to seven years in state prison – to be served as supervised parole at the Willard Drug Treatment Center – following an agreed upon disposition between the county’s district attorney’s and public defender’s offices.
If successful, Cahill will face seven years of post-release supervision.
In February, Cahill was charged with third degree burglary and fourth degree grand larceny – class D and E felonies respectively – following a police investigation into a forced entry at the St. Bartholomew’s Parish Center and the theft of electronic equipment from its office.
Cahill admitted he was intoxicated the night of the incident.
• Keith Blackwell, 23, of Norwich, pleaded guilty to one count of first degree criminal contempt – a class E felony – and was sentenced to one year in the Chenango County Correctional Facility following a plea deal negotiated between the county’s district attorney’s and public defender’s offices.
Blackwell was indicted on the criminal contempt charged in January, accused of violating a duly served court order of protection issued by Norwich City Court when he struck the subject of the order in the face.
• Shawn Fowlston, 27, was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to charges of third degree rape, a class E felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
Fowlston – who pleaded guilty to one count of first degree sexual abuse, a class D felony, in January – is currently serving a two-and-a-half year sentence in state prison after admitting he subjected another individual to unwanted sexual contact, restraining her against her will while using physical force.
The rape and endangering charges stem from a prior incident and Fowlston will appear in Chenango County Court at a later date.
• No disposition was reached in the case of Joshua Paine, 20, of Guilford, indicted in January on two counts of second degree burglary, a class C felony, and one count of third degree burglary, a class D felony.
The charges stem from three separate incidents that occurred on or about Oct. 16, Nov. 29 and Dec. 6 of 2011, at two separate locations in the Town of Guilford. It’s alleged that Paine, in concert with another individual, did knowingly enter and remain unlawfully with the intent to commit a crime at a pair of Guilford residences located on County Road 35. It’s also alleged that Paine did commit the crime of larceny, stealing a 1939 Cherry Valley School class ring, cash and several antique items.
Paine was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $1,000 cash bail and will re-appear in court at a later date.
